Piltdown man was discovered in Piltdown England in 1908. A workman at the Piltdown gravel pit handed Charles Dawson a portion of a human skull.
In 1911 Dawson found several more pieces of the skull in the gravel heap next to the pit.
In 1912 Dawson took his finds to Arthur Smith Woodward, who seemed very interested due to the embarrassing lack of respectable British fossils.
Later in 1912 the dig continued, more pieces of skull were found, then the lower jaw of Piltdown man was discovered.
In Dec. Dawson and Woodward officially announced the discovery of the earliest known Englishman, named Piltdown man.
The skull was quite modern, but the lower jaw seemed "primative". Some doubted the association of the two. Experts said a canine tooth was needed to resolve the association.
SO GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT!!!!
The following August the canine tooth was found just laying on the ground (come on!!). Piltdowns remaining skeptics felt the one thing needed was the discovery of a second Piltdown, so guess what happened next...
In early 1915 Piltdown 2 was discovered in another gravel pit a few miles away from the first site. Remarkably the "exact" pieces needed to identify it with Piltdown 1 were found at the second site (who's exact location was never given) thus confirming Piltdown 1.
And now for the rest of the story...
In 1953, over 40 years later, Kenneth Oakly, Joseph Weiner, and Wilfred Le Gros Clark discovered that Piltdown man was a fraud.
The skull was the only legitimate item found at the site and was dated at only 520-720 years ago. All other items had been placed there.
And the worst part was the jawbone, it belonged to and orangutan, whose teeth had even been filed to fit the skull!!!!
Evolutionist hate to hear mention of poor Piltdown, and will tell you that true evolutionists never believed in him. But the fact is it took 40 years to correct the mistake.
