THE BENEFITS OF CALVARY
Atonement
Luke 23:33; Psalms 68:19; 103:2; 116:12
The theme for this week is “Calvary”. Calvary was a
place of suffering, death, and brutality. It was also a place of
great blessing to the sinner. I want to dwell upon the thought of
“the benefits of Calvary”. There are many blessings
that flow like a river from the cross of Christ. By that I mean
not the physical cross, but the work of our Lord on the cross. I
want to narrow our consideration to three benefits; Atonement,
Access, and Acceptance.
First, Atonement . . .Romans
5:11 (only time in NT)
Mentioned 70 times in OT (Ex,
Lev, Num 65 x)
I. The Meaning of the Word
Atonement: Romans 5:8
- An exchange: He died for
us
Romans 5:8
- To cover:
Romans 4:5-7
- To cancel:
Hebrews 9:25-26
- A reconciliation: No more
enemies
Romans 5:10
II. The Means By Which This
Came About: 1 Peter 2:24
- Christ died in our place:
substitution:
1 Peter 2:24
- Christ died willingly, under no
obligation: vicarious:
1 Peter 2:22
- Christ’s death was
expiatory: His work accomplished full pardon:
Hebrews 9:12-14; Hebrews 10:11-14; Isaiah
53:10-11
(It satisfied the
Father)
III. The Result of the Work
of Christ on Calvary: 1 Peter 2:24-25
- We are now able to live in
righteousness
- We are in fellowship with the
Lord
